As a composition teacher, Carolyn Bremer aims to nurture each student's unique, personal voice. Her former students work and study in an impressive variety of fields: composition professors, multimedia technologists, composers-in-residence, band directors, dance composers, theory professors, alternative songwriters, church musicians, and audio engineering instructors. She was recognized with the first Presidential Professorship named at the University of Oklahoma for meeting the highest standards of excellence in teaching.

Her students have won several prizes. Dr. Gregory Hoepfner was awarded Second Prize in the 1998 Britten on the Bay Composition Contest. Ralf Gawlick won the same prize in 2000. Gawlick has also won the ASCAP Awards to Young Composers, the UNICEF Composition Contest, and Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Dr. Brian Shepard has won several Addy awards for his commercials. Aaron Feldman is a BMI Student Composer Award Winner. Mark Wilder was the featured composer at the 1996 Mannes New Music Festival in New York City. Roger Ward is composer-in-residence with the California Philharmonic.

While the stylistic breadth and techniques of contemporary classical music are at the core of her teaching, Carolyn welcomes any aesthetic.

former students speak:

"Her teaching allowed me to develop quickly and confidently as a composer and enabled me to create a body of work that showed both skill and personality. I've studied with many fine composers and Carolyn Bremer is definitely the best teacher I've ever had." (Roger Ward, Composer-in-Residence, California Philharmonic)

"Carolyn brought an openness to her studio which encouraged me to explore a huge variety of music through listening, score study, performance, and my own composition. Most of all she made me be practical. Her knowledge of instruments and player's attitudes towards performance caused me to reevaluate my writing so that I could get more performances." (Jay Laging, Band Director at H. Grady Spruce High School, Dallas, TX)

"Carolyn Bremer is a teacher of extraordinary skill and diversity. She has an uncanny knowledge of different compositional styles and compositional techniques." (Corey Jackson, Masters Composition Major at the University of Oklahoma)

"She not only inspires confidence, but shows you how to follow through; no matter how wacky or wimpy the initial idea may seem, she can see its potential, and show you how to turn that twiddle of a tune into a piece with musical integrity." (Melina Evard, Senior Composition Major at the University of Oklahoma)
